Sugar Belly! Experiment Showing Your Kids The Affects Of Sugar In Their Guts

This was a fun and educational experiment to do with my daughter. It’s a great visualization of what happens to our guts when we eat sugar. Watch to see the experiment and what my daughter learned from it.

Although my daughter was joking at the end of the video and understands that sugar causes inflammation in our bellies, I do think she will need many reminders. This experiment has created a good mental image to use for those reminders.

What You Will Need For The Experiment:

  • (3) small vials or bottles (I bought empty shampoo bottles at the Dollar Tree)
  • dry yeast (you can purchase at the grocery store)
  • granulated sugar
  • latex balloons
  1. Fill the first bottle with with warm water only.
  2. Fill the second bottle with warm water, 1 teaspoon of dry yeast, and 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar. Stir ingredients.
  3. Fill the second bottle with warm water, 2 teaspoons of dry yeast, and 2 teaspoons of granulated sugar. Stir ingredients.
  4. Stretch balloons and place one over each bottle opening.
  5. Wait a few hours and see the balloons inflate!
